The Serpent Prince's Tale
Chapter 1: The Coming of Age Ceremony“Your Royal Highness!” a voice exclaimed, “It’s time to wake up!”Groggily, the prince raised himself upright on his luxurious king-sized bed, wiping his eyes as he stared in the direction the voice was coming from.A tall yet non-imposing figure stood by the door frame, light peeking in from the hallway through the door crack. “The guests would be arriving in a couple of hours from now,” the soothing voice said softly “Would you like me to request the chefs to prepare you your breakfast, sir?”“The usual, please,” the sleepy prince replied, “and you can call me Miki… you know that right, Yun?” he said, mustering a faint smile. The servant responded with a curt nod and a sheepish smile before gently closing the doors to the prince’s quarters as they headed towards the kitchen to notify the chefs. The sounds of their footsteps walking down the hallway fading away ever so softly until the room was completely silent. The drowsy prince took a moment to process his thoughts, looking off at the foot of his bed as he patted the quilted blanket that covered his body. “Guests?” he thought to himself… Right! The Coming of Age Ceremony is being held today in the castle! A frantic, yet excited feeling surged throughout his body as he shook off the fatigue. The Coming of Age Ceremony is an event dedicated to celebrating the transition from youth to true royalty of children of reigning Kings and Queens. This celebration is recognized in all parts of Tuhra among humans and magikin alike, in societies where noble ranks remain implemented. However, the mere thought of this ceremony cementing the outcome of the rest of the Serpent Prince’s life left him feeling helpless; a monotonous lifestyle consisting of teas and proper royal etiquette did not seem fit for his adventurous soul.As a child, he often envied his peers who lived outside the castle’s walls. The Hebizens who had friends their age with whom they could explore the forest. The Hebizens whose parents did not monitor their every move nor criticized their mannerisms... The Hebizens who had a childhood. He was unsure whether this lifestyle that awaited him was suited for him. Most certainly because he was no fan of tea.Although he does wish some things had been different during his upbringing, Mikio was content and very grateful for the position he had been given. With no worry of having a roof over his head, nor concern when his next meal would be.He had changed from his pyjamas into his regular clothing after passing by his little throne room to freshen up and fix his hair. Although his clothing may appear inappropriate considering the tropical climate, Serpanorans have created an innovative fabric using local plants. A light fabric that provides enough insulation from the cold weather, but not too much that it becomes unbearable in heat waves or strong sunlight. His outfit consisted of a gilded royal green robe that overlaid a yellow turtleneck and trousers. He also wore a pair of polished dark grey boots, and two gloves on both hands that had been gifted to him by his mother, Sumire. Other minor accessories completed his everyday attire from his little earrings to his painted fingernails.Taking one last moment before starting his day, he pushed open the doors to his balcony and laid his hands on the railing, watching over the vast dense jungle before him as he admired the sunrise. “What a sight to behold,” he thought to himself. The purple and orange skies blended beautifully into one as the bustling and lively sounds of Serpanora’s wildlife waking up to a new day filled the silence of his once silent room. The guests would be arriving soon from all corners of Tuhra. He was most excited to meet with people of other nations as he always appreciated the diversity and culture they brought along with them. Sure, he’s met humans and other magikin in the past, but never had he had a day dedicated solely for him to spend his time chatting with people his age.Mikio was secluded, deprived from most contact with others even within the kingdom. He would rebel against his royal obligations and find ways to sneak out of the castle and build relationships with other Hebizens of the Den.His naivety and positive outlook on life with no true grasp on the reality of the world left him vulnerable to many who harbor ill intent. But then he met a friend, Towa, who taught him to be vigilant and aware of how others would perceive him for being fortunate and of noble ranking.Towa had this long white and silver hair that he always meticulously coiffed to accentuate his features. Unlike Mikio, Towa had red markings instead of green ones. His kind golden eyes and friendly smile made him quite known around the Den. He was the anchor that kept Mikio grounded and sane, and who gave the little prince a sense of normalcy and belonging. As the years went by, Towa enlisted in the Den’s army; an amusing memory that entertained Mikio when Towa had come back with much shorter hair.Soon after Towa’s departure from the Den to train alongside the army, Mikio undertook the mentorship of Serpanora’s local druid, Asaki. Mikio was not particularly fond of fencing, mainly because he wasn’t good at it, but he felt he could learn something else more useful. With approval, he began mastering the art of druidry and aided the Den in health and care facilities to give back to his people. Seeing his potential, Asaki gifted him a snake companion whom he named Sneaker to protect him should he participate among the army’s ranks.Mikio was hopeful to see Towa at the ceremony today. Although, he was uncertain whether Towa would truly show up or not. Rarely did regular Hebizens show up at such events unless it was for music or food preparation. Should he not attend the ceremony, Mikio simply wished Towa was safe. The resurgence of these memories brought a smile to his face as his mind and thoughts were devoid of worry and concern about the ceremony, but rather pure bliss. His shoulders were lax as he rested his face on his hand, taking in one last breath as he stared into the crack of dawn.Suddenly… crack! The railing that supported the prince faltered over his weight as he leant on it. Mikio let out a yelp as he plummeted down his balcony over fifty feet to the ground. It all happened so quickly, yet he felt everything was in slow-motion. His eyes widened as he looked below him; arms flailing out as he tried to reach for any branches he could latch on to and stop him from falling. In the corner of his eye, he saw Sneaker lunging their body towards him in an attempt to catch him from the balcony. It was too late.“How embarrassing,” he thought to himself. This couldn’t be how his story ends, especially on a day like this. He was falling head-first onto the stone path that led into the castle. He closed his eyes as he braced for impact.

The Serpent Prince's Tale
Chapter 2: The FallA gentle cool breeze swayed the leaves of the jungle. The tropical and humid climate was ideal for the lush flora to flourish and the vibrant wildlife to thrive. With chipperchimps fooling around and chantacoos singing about, there on the ground laid still of what seemed to be a green lump. The sun had reached its prime and was now positioned directly over the prince. Its rays shone bright directly hitting his figure as he slowly began to regain consciousness. His eyes closed, a pounding headache reverberated inside his head as he slowly and carefully pushed himself to sit upright on the grass with his back against a tree.Had no one heard his screams as he fell down? Actually, he thought to himself, it’s a good thing no one had. He would’ve died from embarrassment. But he’s not. He’s very well alive. Right? The path he had fallen onto was a busy route that many guards and domestic servants of the castle took to get around. How had nobody come to his aid? Perhaps his attire camouflaged well into the environment. After all, Serpanorans were known for their sneaky behaviour and clever tactics.Opening his eyes, Mikio looked at his surroundings. First at the ground, to ease his eyes and adjust to the light. However, something immediately caught his attention— or rather, the lack of something.“Where’s… the path?” he asked himself confused.Hastily jumping up on his two feet, he stares blankly above him where his room should be. There was nothing to see but the clear blue sky peeking through the webs of dense leaves that formed the canopy. His hurried and careless actions paired with his state of shock caused him to fall back down to the ground. Where was he? He recognized his surroundings— from the position of the trees to the differing varieties of flowers to even the melodies of the songs that the chantacoos sang. There was no doubt about it, he was in Serpanora. His excursions sneaking outside the castle alongside his mentorship from Asaki proved this. It just seemed as if the entirety of the Den had simply… vanished. His chest suddenly felt empty. A void inside him began to form and fester. Questions ran through his head as he tried to find explanations to them all, but to no avail. Mikio felt lost and alone. In such a dangerous environment, exposed to the elements and vulnerable to any attack, Mikio knew better than to make any sort of irrational—“MOM?? … TOWAAAAA??!” he exclaimed in a fit of desperation, hoping for a response or any quick answer to this new predicament he found himself in.There was no response. All he could hear was the bustling wildlife that surrounded him.“Am I… dead?” his mind began to wander. Jokingly, perhaps he had accidentally gone through some portal that led him to an alternate universe. He comically pats his head and body checking for any injuries, but nothing. Was he in some sort of limbo or purgatory? His stomach rumbled and signalled his hunger. Alright, this was definitely not heaven. Thoughts of that lavish breakfast he was going to have made for him and the tasty delicacies that would have been present at the ceremony left him irritated. His usual consisted of a sweet and savoury french toast combo. Brioche buns were soaked in a batter made from the finest Avenian eggs, and milk imported from the land of the Anmans. The savoury french toast was lined with delicately-spiced honey glazed sausages, topped with a layer of Tuhra’s world renown melted Glutton’s cheese, and garnished with green herbs and the zest of an orange. An assorted selection of berries native to the Serpanoran jungle decorated the airy whipped cream swirl that rested atop the sweeter option of the two. A drizzle of syrup and a sprig of bonberi completed this regal dish.Together, this meal would have certainly sent the little prince to heaven. Instead, he was left drooling and pouting, upset he hadn’t had his breakfast as he had requested— like some child throwing a temper tantrum at the toys section.Amidst his cries, Miki unknowingly and inadvertently caught the attention of some creature hiding in the bushes. Well if he wasn’t in heaven yet, maybe now was his chance. But he wasn’t ready. He didn’t want to go then, he surely doesn’t want to go now. If anything, he’s ready to run.Yet, his curiosity got the better of him. If this place was not Serpanora, then who knows what may be lurking in the jungle. In his state of confusion, he was hoping that whatever was hiding in the bushes, held the answers to everything. Should he be wrong and face some predatory cat, he’s hopeful he can slither away.As a security measure, he grabbed the largest stick he could find and readied himself to whack whatever came out of that bush. As the rustling continued, Mikio approached the bush quietly, raising his weapon preemptively. The rustling grew louder and the bush began to shake violently. “What am I doing,” he said to himself, nervously laughing under his breath. Just then, a slender figure popped out from the bush.It was Sneaker, his snake companion that was hiding in the bushes all along. “I could’ve whacked you!” Mikio angrily exclaimed before dropping his weapon to the ground. He carefully helped his buddy out of the bush and rested him around his neck as one would a fancy scarf. “I’m so glad to see you,” he said, releasing a sigh of relief as he brushed his finger along Sneaker’s body.Looking around him once more, he felt a sense of ambivalence. He felt lost, but free. This opportunity excited him, but the thought of never returning home frightened him. He knew better than to sit in place and mope all day. Before setting off, he marked a tree with his family’s crest, the same tree that would have been right outside his balcony. Taking one final deep breath, Mikio journeyed forwards— wherever forwards was.Days had gone by, and still no sign of the Den nor its Hebizens. No Yun, no Asaki… no Towa. He even visited the locations where their homes should be only to find those areas overgrown with foliage, as if no trace of civilization had once set foot around these parts.A pit began to form in his stomach. Yes, he was hungry, but rather, he felt sick at the thought that maybe none of it was real. Then what would explain his memories? His clothing? His habits and preferences? Were these memories… constructed?None of it made sense to him, but he wished not to forget about his past. Those faces, those names, those experiences… he cherished them deeply. Mikio missed them. He was grateful to at least have Sneaker by his side or else he would have been completely alone. He revisited the tree he had marked days ago and removed his left glove, storing in it any valuables pertaining to his friendships and royal past before burying it directly below the carving he had made. Mikio did so as an offering to whomever transported him to this alternate universe— that was what he concluded anyways.“We’ll be alright,” he remained optimistic as he turned towards Sneaker. Maybe this was a trial, or the true Coming of Age ceremony. Whatever it was, he knew he couldn’t dwell on it forever.“Come on, let’s go,” he said before venturing into the night in search of shelter.
